Jordan Bardella

Whatever one thinks of his politics, Bardella is impossible to ignore. Reaching the presidency of the National Rally in his twenties is a striking display of ambition and discipline, and his mastery of social media to reach younger voters marks him as a creature of the current moment. What intrigues me most is the paradox at his core: a young man of immigrant background leading a party long defined by hostility to immigration. That tension says a great deal about modern French politics. I do not have to endorse him to recognize that where he steers France next is one of the most consequential questions in Europe.
