My Take

What fascinates me about Mourinho is that he proved tactical intelligence can beat playing pedigree. A modest playing career, a degree in Lisbon, and then he out-thought a generation of more celebrated names. I have always read his press-conference theatrics as armor — every insult he draws toward himself is pressure lifted off his players. Calling yourself the Special One should be insufferable, yet he kept backing it up with trophies until the nickname became plain description. Even now, decades in, he coaches like a man with a grudge, and I find that strangely admirable. Football is more interesting, and more honest about its own vanity, whenever he is in the dugout.
