My Take

Catherine Martin is, to my mind, one of the great unsung architects of cinematic spectacle. Four Academy Awards split across costume and production design is staggering, and her long partnership with Baz Luhrmann produced some of the most maximalist, intoxicating worlds put to film. I am endlessly more fascinated by the craftspeople who build the universe than the actors who merely inhabit it, and Martin is the purest example: every fabric, every set dressing in Moulin Rouge or Gatsby is saturated with intent. That an Australian designer became a Companion of the Order of Australia for this work feels entirely earned.
