My Take

McDermitt took Eugene from a cowardly, mullet-sporting liar into one of The Walking Dead's most unexpectedly resonant characters, and that arc is a real testament to his range. Coming from a stand-up background, he brought a sharp comic instinct that made Eugene both funny and oddly tragic. The character's running gambit of pretending to have a scientific cure was one of the show's better long cons. I always enjoyed how he could turn nervous rambling into genuine pathos; it's harder to play that kind of role well than it looks.
