My Take

Joshua Cavallo earns my deepest respect, and not primarily for what he's done on the pitch. In 2021 the Australian became the first active male top-flight professional footballer to come out as gay, an act of courage whose ripple effects are impossible to overstate. Someone has to open the door first so others can follow, and he chose to be that person knowing the scrutiny it would invite. At 176 cm he was never the biggest player, yet his impact off the field dwarfs most careers. His life itself, more than any statistic, is what I think history will remember about him.
