Julian Casablancas is one of those rare figures who managed to make rock feel genuinely urgent again at a time when nobody thought that was possible. When Is This It dropped in 2001, The Strokes sounded like New York City itself — grimy, beautiful, effortlessly cool — and Julian's half-mumbled, half-sneered vocals were the whole attitude in a voice. What I love about him is that he never coasted on that legacy; Phrazes for the Young showed a weirder, more synthesizer-obsessed side, and then the Voidz records went full-on experimental in ways that confused plenty of fans but felt genuinely fearless. Room on Fire and First Impressions of Earth hold up incredibly well, and Angles and The New Abnormal proved The Strokes still had real songs in them.
