My Take
Jürgen Klopp proves my pet theory that elite management is mostly emotional engineering. The gegenpressing was brilliant, yes, but plenty of coaches have good ideas; few can make grown professionals run themselves into the ground out of sheer love for the man on the touchline. A modest playing career at Mainz gave him humility, and I think that is the secret — he never confuses himself with the star. Germany handed him manager-of-the-year honors twice and a federal Order of Merit, but his real trophy is the emotional bond every club keeps with him long after he leaves. After a spell as a Red Bull executive he is back on the touchline with Germany, and I am curious whether that charisma works as well with a national team.
