Juri Ueno

I first knew her as the girl with the saxophone in Swing Girls, and honestly that alone would have made a decent career. Then came Nodame Cantabile, and she did the thing most rising stars refuse to do: she played weird as actually weird. No winking at the camera, no quietly softening the character into something cute and safe. Once you are popular in Japan there is enormous gravity pulling you toward the likable-lead lane, and Juri Ueno kept steering out of it — a period-drama princess here, voice work there. Born 25 May 1986 in Kakogawa, Hyōgo, she took the Elan d'or Newcomer prize in 2007. What strikes me most now is how little she seems to chase visibility. She is not everywhere. But when she does turn up, the temperature of a scene changes immediately, and that is a rarer skill than fame.
