I first knew her as the girl with the saxophone in Swing Girls, and honestly that alone would have made a decent career. Then came Nodame Cantabile, and she did the thing most rising stars refuse to do: she played weird as actually weird. Once you are popular in Japan there is enormous gravity pulling you toward the likable-lead lane, and Juri Ueno kept steering out of it — a period-drama princess here, voice work there.
