Kaiō Hiroyuki

Eleven years as ozeki. Say it fast and it sounds like a statistic; sit with it and it starts to look impossible. In sumo, ozeki is the least comfortable rank there is — you are permanently one bad tournament away from demotion, and the only escape upward is yokozuna. Kaio simply refused to fall, tournament after tournament, longer than anyone else in the history of the sport. What I find most telling is how slowly he got there. He entered in 1988 and did not reach the top makuuchi division until 1993, then took another seven years to make ozeki. Nothing about his career reads as prodigy. He was a big man from Nogata in Fukuoka who got a grip on you and would not let go, and he kept turning up. Careers built on brilliance tend to burn out early. Kaio's was built on stubbornness, and stubbornness is what ended up owning the record books.
