My Take

What moves me about Kate Barry is how quietly she carved out her own space. Born into one of the most photographed families imaginable, she chose to stand behind the camera instead, shooting for Vogue and The Sunday Times Magazine with a restrained, intimate eye. I admire photographers who let their subjects breathe rather than imposing a signature style, and her portraits do exactly that. Her death in 2013 lends the work an unavoidable melancholy, but I try not to read it backwards into the images. What remains is a body of fashion photography with unusual warmth and honesty, and I think it deserves far more attention than it gets.
