Kate Berlant

Berlant is the kind of performer I'd happily watch flail and misdirect for an hour, because the surrealist, absurdist style she's known for rewards close attention. Her largely improvised debut special, Cinnamon in the Wind, shows exactly why I find her interesting. She works the seam between sincerity and parody, leaving you laughing while quietly unsure what you just witnessed. As an actor, comedian, and writer, she controls the whole machine. My take: she's a stage-first talent whose genius only fully lands live, and that makes her worth seeking out.
