My Take
Katharine McPhee is one of those talents who got handed a massive springboard — runner-up on American Idol Season 5 in 2006 — and actually did something interesting with it rather than coasting on the exposure. Her debut album shot to number two on the Billboard 200, which is no small feat for a reality TV alum, and "Over It" proved she had real commercial instincts. What I find genuinely compelling about her is the pivot to acting: she held her own on CBS's Smash for two seasons opposite some serious Broadway heavyweights, and later played the lead in the network drama Scorpion for four seasons. A lot of people from Idol fade into nostalgia circuits, but McPhee kept reinventing her lane — Broadway, TV drama, cabaret — which tells you there's real ambition and craft behind the pretty voice and the Hollywood upbringing.
