My Take
Closers who can change the mood of an entire stadium just by walking out of the bullpen are rare, and Sasaki was one of them. At 190 cm he threw a forkball that seemed to vanish in front of the hitter, and the nickname Daimajin, the great demon, fit him perfectly. What still strikes me is the timing of his American chapter. He left Yokohama, where he had already won a Japan Series, and took the American League Rookie of the Year award at 32 - a rookie who was nothing of the kind. A place in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame, a later life as a racehorse owner, and one of the most unmistakable entrances the game has produced.
