Mikio Date

Okay, I'll admit it: Mikio Date is my favorite kind of comedian, the big guy with the intimidating build who turns out to be the gentlest soul in the room. As the straight man of Sandwich Man, he's got this beautifully patient timing, letting Tomizawa wander off into nonsense before reeling him back with a tired, affectionate "what are you even talking about." That's the whole magic for me. And he's a Sendai man through and through, the kind of hometown loyalty you can feel, which gave his post-2011 commitment to Tohoku real weight. What I love most is that he's not just funny, he's reassuring. Plenty of comics can land a joke; very few can make a whole studio relax just by walking in. He does it without trying, and that's rarer than people think.

Mikio Date is a Japanese comedian, radio personality, and television host born on September 5, 1974, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. He is best known as the straight-man half of the comedy duo Sandwichman, which he forms alongside Takeshi Tomizawa. Date and Sandwichman rose to national prominence after winning the 2007 M-1 Grand Prix, one of Japan's most prestigious stand-up comedy competitions. Beyond his comedy work, he is recognized for his long-standing efforts to support his home region of Tohoku, particularly in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
