My Take

Kevin Costner is my favorite kind of stubborn. The same man who swept the 1991 Oscars for directing and producing Dances with Wolves took home a Razzie for Worst Actor barely a year later, and he seemed to shrug off both with the same weathered calm. That indifference to the scoreboard is, I think, his secret. Across five decades he has kept betting on unfashionable, wide-open American stories whether audiences loved them or laughed at them, and the 2012 Emmy and the 2013 honorary Cesar suggest the long game pays. Few stars trust their own compass this completely; fewer still earn the right to.
