My Take

Kevin Rowland is too often reduced to one song, but "Come On Eileen" alone earns him a place in pop history, and I think that undersells him badly. As the driving force behind Dexys Midnight Runners, he fused Celtic soul, fierce conviction and a frontman's swagger into something nobody else was making in the early 1980s. What strikes me most is his stubbornness as an artist, the way he chased his own vision regardless of fashion. Longevity in music demands that kind of bullheaded integrity, and Rowland has it in spades. A genuine original worth rediscovering.
