Kiki Dee

Kiki Dee deserves far more credit than her one famous duet suggests. To me, the truly remarkable fact is that a girl from Bradford became the first British woman signed to Motown's Tamla, an audacious leap into the heart of Black American music. Her blue-eyed soul voice has a warmth and elasticity that I find genuinely affecting, not novelty but conviction. I respect the nerve it took to chase that sound in an era that offered her no obvious path. She is quietly one of Britain's most underrated vocalists, and I would urge anyone to look past the hit and hear the real singer.
