Kitty Marion

Kitty Marion is the kind of figure I think history quietly owes more attention to. Born in Germany in 1871 and emigrating to England at fifteen, she began as an actor but became something far braver: a suffragette and birth-control advocate who endured prison and hunger strikes, earning the Hunger Strike Medal. I admire how completely she traded the comfort of the stage for conviction. Reading about her, I am struck that the freedoms many take for granted today were paid for by women willing to risk their bodies. She deserves remembering.
