My Take
Kosuke Hagino won Olympic gold in the 400 m individual medley in Rio in 2016, and the individual medley is the event I respect most in the pool. You swim all four strokes. There is nowhere to hide a weakness. A specialist can build a career on one beautiful stroke; a medley swimmer has to be world-class four times in a row, in the same race, while the lactic acid arrives. Hagino did that, took four Olympic medals in total, and still holds Asian records in the medley events. Japan gave him the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2016 for it. But the part of his story that stays with me isn't Rio. It's afterward. He reached the summit at 21, and the question of what a person does with the rest of their twenties once the defining thing has already happened is genuinely hard — harder, I suspect, than any race. He has since retired from competition. From the outside, that looks less like an ending than like someone finally allowed to answer the question on his own terms.
