Yūko Ōshima

I have a real soft spot for Yūko Ōshima, because hers is one of those careers that just keeps reinventing itself. A child actor from small-town Tochigi who clawed her way to the dead center of AKB48 at the height of the idol boom, she always struck me as the rare member who could actually act, not just smile on cue. There was a fierce, slightly tomboyish energy to her performances that set her apart, and when she graduated to pursue acting full-time, it felt earned rather than abrupt. Watching a "cute idol" deliberately chase gritty dramatic roles is exactly the kind of stubbornness I admire. She's tiny at 152cm, but everything about her reads big-hearted and steely. I'm always rooting for her.
