My Take

Kurt Jara appeals to me as a study in the long football life. Coming out of Innsbruck and playing as a midfielder before moving into management, he embodies the rare athlete who translates a player's instincts into the coach's craft. Born in 1950, he belonged to that 1970s generation that had to grind its way up, and a midfielder of his build was surely the thinking type, surveying the whole pitch and dictating tempo. I am drawn to people who get two acts out of one passion, building on hard-won playing experience rather than walking away, and his steady devotion to the game earns my respect.
