Larry the Cable Guy

Larry the Cable Guy fascinates me precisely because the persona is so deliberate. Daniel Whitney is a Nebraska farm kid who studied drama in college, dropped out, and manufactured a thick blue-collar Southern character and rode it to massive fame through the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. That gap between the man and the act is, to me, the real craft: it takes intelligence and discipline to play unpretentious so convincingly. Add stand-up, acting, writing, and even singing, and you have a versatile entertainer who is shrewder than his good-ol'-boy image lets on. I tend to admire performers whose simplicity is engineered, and he's a textbook case.
