My Take

Tirard is the sort of French filmmaker I have a soft spot for. He started as a critic before stepping behind the camera, and I always feel that watching-then-making path lends a film extra warmth and self-awareness. Directing and writing his own scripts, he carried a lightness and gentle humor that feels distinctly French to me. That he studied at New York University adds an intriguing cross-cultural seasoning to his eye. Losing him in 2024 at fifty-seven felt premature, but I find real comfort in the kindness and wit he left embedded in his films, the kind worth revisiting.
