Leonardo Bonucci

Bonucci is, to me, a thinking man's defender. At 189 cm he had the obvious physical presence, but what set him apart at Juventus and for Italy was his brain and his passing range, turning defense into the start of an attack. That earned him a national knighthood, which says something about his stature beyond the pitch. I respect that he has moved into coaching rather than drifting away from the game, choosing to pass his craft to younger players. Defenders rarely get the romance afforded to scorers, but Bonucci made the art of stopping play genuinely beautiful to watch.
