My Take
Lev Grossman won me over with the Magicians trilogy, which I regard as one of the smartest reinventions of the fantasy genre. He took the familiar magic-school premise and aged it up, threading in real grief, disillusionment, and the ache of unmet expectation. That he managed this while spending years as Time's book critic and technology writer tells me his fiction is informed by a genuinely sharp critical mind. I value writers who refuse to let fantasy stay childish, and Grossman does exactly that. The Harvard-trained intellect shows, but never at the cost of feeling. I'm always curious what he'll write next.
