My Take
Carrying the surname Simone would crush most performers, but Lisa Simone built her own voice in the shadow of a legend. As Nina Simone's only child, she could have coasted on legacy; instead she earned her place across Broadway and off-Broadway in Rent, The Lion King, Aida, and Les Miserables before claiming her identity as a jazz singer. I find that second-generation courage compelling. It is one thing to inherit a name, another to make audiences forget whose name it is. Born in Mount Vernon, she represents the harder, more honest path of proving yourself on your own terms.
