Luis de la Fuente

De la Fuente strikes me as the quiet triumph of the unglamorous professional. As a left-back he spent thirteen seasons doing the unshowy defensive work, winning league titles and a cup double with Athletic Bilbao rather than chasing personal glory. Now he manages Spain's national team, and I find that arc genuinely moving. We tend to celebrate the strikers and forget the grinders, yet here is a man who built a coaching career on patience and craft. From a wine town in La Rioja, he carries a certain understated tenacity. I root for people like him, the ones who rise by accumulation rather than spectacle.
