Mac Suzuki

Mac Suzuki took the route nobody in Japanese baseball takes. Born in Kobe in 1975, he was sent to the United States by his parents at 16 after being expelled from high school, which put him outside the whole sacred pipeline: the high school tournament at Koshien, the domestic draft, the years of apprenticeship inside a Japanese club. He started as a laundry boy for the Salinas Spurs. Instead he ground his way up through the American minor leagues, largely alone and barely speaking the language, and reached the top, ultimately pitching six seasons in Major League Baseball. He later returned to play in Japan's Pacific League, and his professional career ran eighteen seasons in total. Judged purely on numbers he was a journeyman rather than a star, and I do not think numbers are the right measure here. A 191 cm kid who had been thrown out of school proved that the established order was optional, and that changed what young Japanese players could imagine for themselves.
