My Take
Maggie Cheung is, to my mind, simply one of the greatest actresses Asia has produced. She entered through a beauty pageant but refused to be defined by her looks, going on to win five Golden Horse Best Actress awards and, in 2004, the Best Actress prize at Cannes, a landmark for any Asian performer. Her work with Wong Kar-wai, especially gliding through In the Mood for Love in those cheongsams, is among the most achingly beautiful screen acting I know. Equal parts grace and steel, she elevated every frame she occupied. I hold her in the highest regard.
