Mai Fuchigami

Mai Fuchigami's story starts with an audition, which is the honest way most voice careers in Japan begin. She's from Fukuoka, passed a talent agency audition, and landed her first leading role as a character in a 2009 video game. She works as a voice actress and as a singer signed to a record label. She went on to voice Miho Nishizumi in Girls und Panzer and won the Synergy Award at the 8th Seiyu Awards in 2014. Voice acting is the least forgiving corner of Japanese entertainment to break into precisely because nothing helps you except the sound you make. There is no red carpet audition, no useful family name, no camera angle to save you. You either read the line in a way the director hasn't heard before or someone else does. Fuchigami cleared that bar and then added the singing side, which in this industry isn't decoration — it roughly doubles the kinds of jobs you can take and gives you a stage presence separate from any one role. Born in 1987, she's now at the point where the newcomers are looking up at her.
