Maniche

What strikes me about Maniche is the sheer breadth of his journey. Plenty of midfielders shine in one league, but he held down the center of the park in Portugal, Russia, England, Spain, Italy and Germany. That kind of adaptability across cultures and styles speaks to a fierce intelligence and resilience. His finest hour, helping Porto lift the Champions League in 2004, came in a side built on grit and tactical discipline, and he was its engine. I respect that he later moved into coaching too; it suggests a love of the game that outlasts a player's prime.
