My Take
Manny Ramirez is, for my money, one of the purest hitters baseball ever produced, and also one of its most gloriously human characters. Out of Santo Domingo and across nineteen big-league seasons, he turned the batter's box into something close to art while turning the outfield into comedy. The phrase Manny being Manny captures a man who refused to be anyone but himself, flaws and all. I know the controversies complicate the legacy, but I cannot help admiring someone who played with that much joy. He helped break Boston's curse, and he made the game feel alive.
