Marco van Basten

Van Basten is, for me, the great what-if of football. The 1988 Euro final volley alone earns him immortality, and his Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player honors confirm he was the most complete striker of his era. Yet what stays with me is the cruelty of an ankle that stopped him playing at 28 and forced his retirement at 30. I find myself admiring not just the goals but the imagination behind them, the sense that he saw scoring as an art form. His later coaching never quite matched the player, but few ever could. A genius cut short, and all the more luminous for it.
