Maria Zakharova

Maria Zakharova is a polarizing figure, and I will not pretend otherwise, but I find the sheer composure of her public role hard to dismiss. Serving as the face of Russia's foreign ministry since 2015 means absorbing relentless scrutiny while staying on message, and that demands a particular kind of nerve. Trained at Moscow's elite diplomatic institute and even dabbling in composition, she is clearly more than a single dimension. Whatever one makes of the politics she represents, the discipline and presence she brings to an unforgiving spotlight is, in my view, genuinely formidable.
