Marianne Jean-Baptiste

Marianne Jean-Baptiste impresses me as a true craftsperson rather than a celebrity. Her work in Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies drew Academy, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations at once, which tells you how completely she inhabited that role. What I value most is that she did not stop at acting; she writes and directs too, the mark of someone who wants to move stories from the inside. Performers who turn to directing often command real trust on set because they understand the actor's position. Still working steadily on films like Rumble Through the Dark, she is the kind of grounded, substance-over-flash talent I always root for.
