My Take
Mario Mandžukić is one of those players who made you appreciate the unglamorous art of being a genuine striker — not a flashy dribbler or a stats merchant, but a guy who threw his 190-centimeter frame into every header, every aerial duel, every defensive press, and somehow kept scoring. Growing up in Slavonski Brod and grinding his way through Croatian football before making it to the top clubs in Germany, Spain, and Italy, he was never the prettiest player on the pitch, but he was often the most decisive. That bicycle-kick goal for Juventus against Real Madrid in the 2017 Champions League final won the UEFA Goal of the Season — and he later became the first player to score an own goal in a World Cup final, then scored at the right end too. Very Mandžukić. Croatia's 2018 World Cup run wouldn't have had the same soul without him. Tough, physical, absolutely relentless — exactly the kind of center forward you build a team around.
