My Take

Marius Simionescu intrigues me as a window into the grit of Eastern European rugby. Born in 1997 in Erbiceni, deep in Iași County, he plays fullback, the lonely last line who has to read the whole field and never flinch. Debuting for Romania's Oaks in 2017 against Canada at barely twenty signals serious composure. I tend to admire athletes from rugby's so-called second tier nations, where there's no PR machine inflating reputations, just the work. He's young enough to still climb, and I like that his story is being written rather than already filed away. He's the sort of player whose ceiling I'd genuinely like to watch.
