Tōru Nakamura

I'll be honest, when Tōru Nakamura first showed up as a pompadoured tough guy in the Be-Bop High School movies, I figured he was just another pretty face who'd punch his way through a couple years and fade out. Boy, was I wrong. The guy quietly turned that 1988 newcomer hype into a multi-decade career, and somewhere along the way he became one of those actors whose mere presence tells you a drama is going to be worth your time. Detective, villain, weary dad, smooth charmer, he slips into all of it without ever showing off, and that handsome face just aged into a kind of quiet gravity. I love performers like him, no scandal-chasing, no flash, just decades of solid, unshowy work. He's the connective tissue that holds a whole production together, and Japanese TV is better for having him.
