My Take
Mark Appel is one of those names that carries a whole essay about expectation. Going first overall in the 2013 draft out of Stanford should have been a coronation, but baseball rarely honors a script. He spent grinding years stuck below the majors before finally debuting for the Phillies, and that long delay is exactly why I respect him. Anyone can shine when the path is smooth; what tells you about a person is whether they keep throwing when the hype curdles into doubt. Appel did, and to me that perseverance is more compelling than the prospect rankings ever were.
