My Take

Mark E. Smith is, for me, the purest embodiment of artistic stubbornness in modern music. He saw the Sex Pistols in 1976, formed the Fall on impulse, and then ran the band like a dictatorship — cycling through dozens of members while remaining the one constant until his death in 2018. That snarling, sneering delivery is unmistakable and utterly uncopyable. The Salford poet never chased trends or polish; he simply imposed his own warped vision on post-punk for four decades. I find that uncompromising single-mindedness deeply admirable. He was difficult, contrarian, and entirely himself to the very end.
