My Take
Martha Wash interests me as much for her fight as for her glorious voice. Rising out of San Francisco through Sylvester's circle and the Two Tons O' Fun, she became the uncredited engine behind some of dance music's biggest anthems. What earns my respect is that she refused to stay invisible, pushing for the vocal-credit reforms that protect singers today. That powerhouse instrument is unmistakable, but the integrity behind it is what makes her a genuine pioneer. I think of her as proof that the real star is sometimes the voice nobody bothered to name.
