My Take

Starr is exactly the kind of actor I treasure: never the lead, always the reason a scene lands. From Bill on Freaks and Geeks to Gilfoyle on Silicon Valley, he's perfected the deadpan, sardonic outsider who steals frames without raising his voice. There's a real craft in that restraint. I find the trivia delicious too, that his real surname is Schienle yet he performs as Starr, a name almost too bright for his dry, withholding personas. Hollywood overflows with leading men; it's the irreplaceable character actors like Starr who give shows their texture, and I'll watch anything he's in.
