Mary Lou McDonald

Mary Lou McDonald strikes me as one of the more compelling political figures in modern Ireland, precisely because she carries such heavy historical baggage with apparent calm. Leading Sinn Féin and serving as Leader of the Opposition demands a thick skin and genuine conviction, and whatever one thinks of her politics, she does not flinch. I find her trajectory from Trinity College graduate to party president fascinating, a reminder that Irish politics is still being actively reshaped. She is a polarizing figure, but polarizing often means consequential. I would rather watch a politician who stands for something clearly than one who hides behind vagueness.
