Masao Komatsu

Masao Komatsu is one of those performers whose value never fit neatly into a database row. Born in Hakata, Fukuoka in 1942 and a graduate of Fukuoka Prefectural Fukuoka High School, he worked as an actor, comedian, voice actor and all-purpose television personality — four labels that, in the Japanese entertainment industry of his era, usually belonged to four different people. What strikes me is how unglamorous that kind of range actually is. Comedy timing, dramatic acting and dubbing work each demand a separate discipline, and carrying all of them for decades means the craft was real rather than a matter of being fashionable. He died in December 2020 at the age of 78. His signature was something you recognised instantly by ear, in the pause before a punchline, and that is precisely the sort of thing no record like this one can preserve.
