My Take
Matt Reeves is one of those directors who quietly became indispensable without ever chasing the spotlight. He started out co-creating Felicity with J.J. Abrams — a very different vibe from where he'd eventually land — then absolutely blew people away with Cloverfield in 2008, a found-footage monster movie that genuinely felt fresh and terrifying. But his real leveling-up moment was the Planet of the Apes sequels, where he turned what could have been blockbuster noise into surprisingly emotional, beautifully shot character studies. Then The Batman in 2022 arrived and settled any remaining debates: Reeves is a craftsman who writes his own scripts, controls his own tone, and delivers a vision that feels completely his. That film made a nearly three-hour noir detective story starring a billionaire in a cape feel genuinely gripping. I trust filmmakers who sweat the atmosphere, and Reeves sweats it like no one else working at that scale.
