My Take

Matthew Vaughn is, to me, one of the most reliable showmen working in popular cinema. From producing Lock, Stock and Snatch to directing Layer Cake, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and Kingsman, he has an almost unfailing instinct for pace, swagger and crowd-pleasing surprise. What I respect is that even with a knighthood and decades in the business, his films never lose their cheeky, rule-breaking energy. He understands that entertainment is a craft, not a compromise. I don't always expect profundity from a Vaughn picture, but I do expect to be thoroughly, unapologetically entertained, and that consistency is genuinely rare.
