My Take
Maurice White is, simply, one of the great architects of joy in popular music. As the founder, leader, songwriter, and producer of Earth, Wind & Fire, the Memphis-born visionary fused soul, funk, jazz, and pop into something instantly uplifting; the opening of "September" still moves me without fail. Twenty-two Grammy nominations and seven wins barely capture how completely he shaped a sound. His 2019 Kennedy Center Honors felt overdue rather than generous. Even after his passing in 2016, that radiant optimism endures undiminished. To me he is less a star than a benefactor whose records reliably lift the spirit.
