MC Lyte

MC Lyte earns my respect as a genuine pioneer, not just a footnote. Releasing the first full solo album by a female rapper in 1988 with Lyte as a Rock took real nerve in a scene that wasn't making room for women. What I appreciate is how she kept expanding: rapper, actress, announcer, businesswoman, all carried by that unmistakably grounded, authoritative voice. Plenty of artists chase reinvention, but few do it while quietly holding a door open for everyone behind them. To me she represents both toughness and dignity, and she's still one of the standards I measure female rap against.
