My Take

MC Solaar fascinates me because he made French rap an act of intellect rather than aggression. Born in Dakar and educated at the University of Paris, he leaned on wordplay, internal rhyme and the inherent musicality of French to turn hip hop into something close to poetry. The pile of Victoires de la Musique he won, and the claim that he is the greatest French rapper ever, feel earned rather than hyped. What I admire most is the calm confidence of it: he never had to shout to sound dangerous. To me he proves that wit and literacy can be the sharpest edge of all.

Overview

Claude Honoré M'Barali (French pronunciation: [klod ɔnɔʁe ɛmbaʁali]; born 5 March 1969), professionally known as MC Solaar (pronounced [ɛm si sɔˈlaʁ]), is a French rapper of Senegalese and Chadian origin. He is one of France's most famous and influential hip hop artists. Some consider him the best French rapper of all time.
