My Take
Critics love to dismiss Michael Bay, and I understand why, but the dismissal misses something important. The man has a genuinely distinctive visual signature, with low angles, golden-hour haze, and cameras that never stop moving, which is more than most respectable directors can claim. A Wesleyan graduate who chose maximalist spectacle on purpose, he built an entire grammar of blockbuster excess that a generation of filmmakers now imitates or reacts against. Are the films loud and sometimes incoherent? Absolutely. But that excess is a real aesthetic, not an accident, and committing so completely to popcorn entertainment is its own kind of integrity. I would rather watch a sincere maximalist than a timid imitator.
